If you are lucky enough to be visiting our beautiful Big Island soon, allow us to share a few things you should know before jumping on your flight.

  1. Hawaii has a ban on plastic bags

It won’t take you long to feel in complete awe of our gorgeous blue waters and lush landscape This ban is to reduce the waste that goes into our oceans, and sadly, into our marine life. Make sure to pack reusable bag or be ready to purchase some when you’re out shopping.

  1. Certain SPF’s can damage marine life

Did you know that some SPF’s are banned in Hawaii? Be sure to check your label for ingredients like oxybenzone, butylparaben, octinoxate, and 4-methylbenzylidine. These are all ingredients to avoid and should not be packed or used while visiting.

Here are a few approved sunscreens you can look for when packing:

  • • Thinksport SPF 50 Sunscreen
  • • Kokua Sun Care Hawaiian SPF 50 Natural Zinc Sunscreen
  • • All Good SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen Lotion
  • • Suntegrity Natural Mineral Sunscreen
  • • Raw Elements SPF 30 Certified Natural Sunscreen
  1. You are not allowed to touch the coral

You might be seeing the trend here, but Hawaiians love our land and we do everything we can to protect it for generations to come. This is one of the many reasons our island is so beautiful. Touching the coral is actually against the law. We ask that you kindly respect our coral, and keep your distance from it while snorkeling. PS check out our incredible snorkeling adventures to book during your visit!

  1. We keep things pretty casual on the Big Island

The vibe in Hawaii is pretty laid back. Flip-flops, sunglasses, swimsuits, cover ups, board shorts are always acceptable. With so many incredible (and casual) places to eat, no need to worry about fancy attire there either. Although, we do suggest packing resort casual attire if visiting the hotel restaurants, The sun is different in Hawaii (right on the equator, so the sun is direct). And since it’s humid, you might not think you are burning, but you really are. We recommend packing for sun protection- remember your rash guards, hats and coverups and most importantly your Reef Safe sunscreen!

If you plan on doing some snorkeling while you are here, we recommend bringing a pair of water shoes with good grip on the sole. The best snorkel spots are in rocky, coral areas. Don’t forget your closed toed shoes if you plan to zipline!
